Compliance

Stair Nosings shall not project beyond the face of the riser and the riser may be vertical or have a splay backwards up to a maximum 25mm.

Stair Nosing profiles shall:

Have a sharp
intersection

Be rounded up to
5mm radius

Be chamfered up to
5mm x 5mm

At the nosing, each tread shall have a strip not less than 50mm and not more than 75mm deep across the full width of the path of travel. The strip may be set back a maximum of 15mm from the front of the nosing. The strip shall have a minimum luminance contrast of 30% to the background. Where the luminous contrasting strip is affixed to the surface of the tread, any change in level shall comply with BCA Clause 7.2 and 7.3.

Where the luminance contrasting strip is not set back from the front of the nosing then any area of luminance contrast shall not extend down the riser more than 10mm.

Stair Nosing is now compulsory in all new and refurbished public environments. In Australia legislated codes and standards are very specific to the design, installation and posititioning of nosings. This legislation is in place to allow a clear intrepretation of stairways in public areas and to ensure that the experience of the vision impaired remains consistent in all landscapes. For more information visit Standards Australia.

It is a requirement of Australian standard AS/NZS 1428.4:2009 that a nosing strip shall be slip resistant, thus it is of the utmost importance that a quality product is chosen to avoid rapid deterioration exposing the building owner to replacement costs and more importantly potential litigation for non compliance and persons injured due to falls. We only quality products with comprehensive warranty across the range.

The majority of people who are vision impaired have some vision. The provision of sufficient luminance contrast in the choice of Stair Nosing will enhance access information for people with vision impairment. Luminance contrast is the difference in the amount of light reflected from the nosing strip compared to the amount of light reflected from the background or adjacent path of travel. Nosing Strips shall have a minimum luminance contrast of 30% compared to the amount of light reflected from the surface of the adjacent path of travel.
